I had always wanted to write a novel, but my conservative nature pushed me toward a career in Information Technology. Once I retired, I need to find something to do with my time. I tried a variety of things, but something kept telling me to write a book. In fact, I had two readings in which I was told I would write a book. In one session I asked, βa book about what?β but there was no answer.
I began my writing journey by reading Immediate Fiction by Jerry Cleaver. The book is set up as a course. In the first exercise I wrote about a psychic medium and through the entire book kept adding to that one story. I wanted to create a character who had a good heart but was also flawed, like all of us. Each journey was about character and integrity winning. When I got to the end of the book, I had over 25K words, which was the starting point of Heβs Alive, the first JJ novel.
Over the years, I have read a lot of books on writing and self-publishing. Here are a few of my other favorites:
- Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody
- The Compass of Character by David Corbett
- Writing the Shadow by Joanna Penn. I love all things Joanna Penn, so check out her website (The Creative Penn. Writing, Publishing, Book Marketing and Making a Living with your Writing)
- Marketing Books on Amazon by Rob Eagar
There are many, many more, but these are the ones I enjoyed the most. If you have ever considered writing a book, give it a try. There are plenty of books and classes available to get you started.
